Hello all,

I am currently developing my first affiliate website.

The content will be info-intensive and I was interested in embedding documentary videos from sites like google vdeo or youtube as well as possibly related news videos from local and national news websites.

Can you please tell me if I am able to do this as long as I post a credit from the author site or would I need to get express permission from the author site?

I thought another option would be to insert a screenshot of the video with a caption providing info about the subject and a link directly to the author site to view.

Do you believe this would be acceptable?

If they provide code to embed the videos, chances are, you're safe. But read the terms of use provided at the source. YouTube and the others all have documents that explain rights.

IANAL - If they offer the code that's considered permission, if not then no.

Haiko's Rule #2 in business - never base your product on technology you don't control.

That doesn't mean not pulling youtube or news vids but that does mean think about getting a flip camera. ;)

That is a really cool camera. I wanted to provide coverage from "authoritative" sources like news media outlets but producing my own content may be a fresh approach though.

Not all sites allow embedding for commercial purposes. For when I have done this, if they do not explicitly state you can for commercial purposes, I have contacted them and asked for permission.

-I will not be directly selling products or services
-I will be posting creatives from merchants as an affiliate partner
-I will be posting articles and adding news feeds to my site
-I will be placing Adsense ads on the site

Why guess? It is never a mistake to get permission.

Exactly right. Just check the Terms of Use at each site that is offering the video that you want to use. If they prohibit use on a commercial site, or if there is anything in the Terms that isn't clear to you, just email them and ask for clarification and permission to use on your site. No need to guess.

Am I missing something? :confused2 To me it's a clear 'yes' since you will be making money using Adsense and AM.

Good Morning Ladidah,

I guess I thought the distinction would do with a site that is directly selling the products on their site with shopping carts, credit card processor, etc versus an info site that has placed ads on the site. The content is free but the ads of course take the user to a retail site.

Don't know if that makes a difference but I will follow the advice of the previous posters and ask permission before embedding videos.
