Thanks for posting! First referrer in the click stream means that cookie set by the affiliate was the first in the referral path. Here is an example below.

Referral Path -

Referrer refer date
SSXXXXX 7/8/2008 2:08:56 AM
SG 7/8/2008 5:09:48 AM

This was the entire shopping cycle for this order. SSXXXXX is the affiliate referrer. It is the first referrer in the order cycle. SG is our code for Shop Google. That is the second referrer in the order. The first referrer led a brand new customer to one of our niche sites. Even though the person continued to shop around (through shop Google) the affiliate was the first advertising channel to lead the customer to our site. That is very valuable traffic for us. This type of lead is what we are after through our affiliate program.


When I say first and only referrer in the click stream, it means that was the only advertising channel that customer went through to buy something from one of our niche stores.

Example below:

On a side note, this is why collecting a phone order has duel importance to my company. If we do not get the phone reference code from a customer that has called in, then not only will the affiliate not get credit for the order, but we ill have no idea how the customer found us. We need that information to ensure we are spending our advertising budget on the most effective marketing channels. Without it, we are spending our budget blindly.

So with phone orders people are supposed to tell you which website they clicked from or does the [affiliate id] show up on the site they clicked to?
I don't see any id when I click through.

Every customer is assigned a unique tracking ID when they enter one of our sites for the first time. This Tracking ID houses the entire referral path of the customer up to the point of the sale. When our customer service representative asks the customer for that code, all of the tracking that a sale placed through the web would have, is acquired. So, when that tracking code is acquired, you will recieve a commission.

Those pages have been selling a bunch of beach chairs, but NOW I finally believe that decent furniture can be sold online; so it looks like that little content site will have to grow the "furniture" section a LOT. And the cool part is I didn't spend a dime on PPC so that entire commish is staying right here. :D

This was a manually credited order. This affiliates cookie was overwritten by a coupon site cookie. If I didn't go back into the order and credit this sale, they would not have recieved a commission.
