My wife was a bit overweight her whole life. Two kids later she was more than a bit overweight. She had tried lots of diets and workouts to no avail. She got a new trainer that had a professional bodybuilding team. His wife was the same age as my wife, had two kids the same ages as ours, her youngest was born on the exact DAY as our youngest, and she was very overwieght before & after her kids and she got herself into COMPETITION shape.
My wife saw that and said "if she can do it, I can do it." She ate a healthy diet (nothing crazy) that was heavy on the protein and she lifted weights. Low weights, high reps, fast circuit. NO cardio. she lost anywhere from .5 - 2.5 pounds a week. She did it for about 18+ months and had lost 40lbs. She looks phenomenal and has not put a pound back. She's still working out to maintain but she really succeeded. I am proud of her. I hope this method may be helpful to someone on this board.

Good for her. You sound proud of your wife and should be. :)
It takes total dedication, discipline and hard work.
Training for a competition requires full support from the entire family. So you should be commended too.
Most people at my gym that don't do cardio seem like they have the most muscle. I guess the cardio depletes the muscle. I think some cardio is good for the heart and to burn the extra fat.

Congrats to both of you. Important thing is not to gain back that lost weight.
Diet + Excercise should be the trick.

When you diet and don't work out, muscle burns faster than fat. So you definitely want to combine the two at all times.
Congratulations!!

No big suprise there. Alcohol not only is calorie laden, it slows down fat metabolism to a standstill.

I believe in your weight loss strategy. I went through a diet a few months ago. I reduced a bunch of carbs from my daily diet -especially in the evenings. I'm an Asian guy so the first thing I dropped off was the rice.
At our company, we offer a diet program which I tried out. 2 of the components are protein and fiber. The fiber part was new to me, but it really helped reducing my hunger.
During the first couple of weeks I did some aerobics for a half an hour - 3 times a week. Then things go in the way and I've been working out 1-2 times lately.
Even though that isn't a hardcore program, I lost 12 pounds and my friends even notice it.
While I did exercise, I think the main thing that has helped me lose weight is greatly reducing carb intake during dinner time.
