The hearing date on Bill 178 has been scheduled for April 13. It is very important for California Affiliates to make sure their interests are heard. Make sure you have contacted and spoken with your representatives. Speak to the Committee members. Mail letters to all committee members. Find out if you can speak at the hearing.
It is very important that the legislation be clear, the vague wording needs to be corrected. You may not be able to fight the tax, but the wording can be improved.

Forgive me as I'm not the most political person normally, but... do we know where this hearing will be and if it will be open to the public? I assume it'll be up in Sacramento and I'm completely willing to drive the two hours up there to sit in.

The hearing will be in Sacramento; specifics are posted at http://www.assembly.ca.gov/committee_hearings/ which currently indicates that the Revenue & Taxation Committee will consider the bill at its April 13 meeting, which is currently scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m. in Room 126 of the State Capitol Building. (My experience is that hearing rooms are changed quite often, as are times and dates.) AB 178 is one of several bills that will be discussed at that hearing.
Note that the parallel bill, AB X3 27, is not scheduled for hearing on this date; it has apparently not been referred to any committee, and I'm not sure how an "extraordinary session" of the legislature works.

I don't see anything on their site on whether or not the hearing will be open to the public, so I hope to hear from any groups organizing.
