Per Andy's suggestion we are in the process of implementing return days into our program.

Now a few clarifications about how this is going to be implemented. When an affiliate link sends a visitor to our site a cookie will be set in the users browser with the affiliates source id. These cookies will be reset based on the last affiliate link used by the customer however if the customer already has an item added to their cart the commission will go to the affiliate id that was last used PRIOR to the item being asked.

Does that seem like the correct way to implement?

PS: Return days will initially be set at 120 days.

So if someone added an item to the cart months ago, then clicked through a link from my site today, added an item to their cart, removed the old item, and checked out, the other affiliate would get credit instead of me? That doesn't seem quite fair.

Michael:

No in the case you outlined you would get credit for the order as the customer could not still have an active shopping cart after a month. Currently all carts expire after 3 hours of inactivity.

Now again using your example. Lets say a customer uses affiliate A's link and adds Newsweek to their cart and then opens a new web browser and searches for "uSubscribe.com Coupons". If they found affiliate site B that brought them back to uSubscribe.com we believe that in this case the commission for Newsweek should go to affiliate A. However if they add another item to their cart that the commission should go to affiate B. This means that a single customer order could be split based upon the customers click-through path.

Is that a correct understanding of what affiliates want and what is "fair"?

I think that sounds fair. Complicated for you guys, but definitely fair.
