Gordon,
It is somewhat useful (and I commend you for being open), but we need a larger data set and it would need to be across a broader range of merchants and prodcuts.

Wayne.
Why do I get this feeling that no matter what we give you data wise it will not be enough? It seems to me everytime you are given some information the bar goes higher, you are asking for information that you know is almost impossible to get.
I can hardly see CJ or any of the other networks opening their books to allow us the privilege of knowing the exact figures that it seems you need to have to have to form an opinion so it seems we are screwed from yet another angle.
Would you please answer the 2 questions below and give the reasons why?
1/. Do these figures not prove that the parasites are taking a substantial sum from us and not this 0.0004% or whatever miniscule percentage it was that was posted somewhere on these forums?
2/. Do these figures not prove that without the parasites our conversion rates would be far higher?

Hey Wayne, today's your day to get the writing lesson.
You could have made the same points in a much more positive-sounding way. What you're saying is valid, but the "tone" of how you say it is, um, not good. It really does come across like you're talking down to Gordon. I'm confident that is not your intent, but that's how it comes across. It takes a special kind of courage to show such detailed stats to the world, and it behooves you to take care in the wording of your response so the person who does so can feel good about it. For starters, try rewording it without that "but" ... that's the biggest tone killer.
Gordon, ignore what Wayne said above. Here's what he really meant: /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
========================
Gordon, thank you for sharing those stats. That's exactly what we need to get the ball rolling. If enough others would follow your example, we could get a large enough data sample to draw some reliable conclusions that would stand up to the most persnickety analysis.
What about it, gang? Are there others who would be willing to follow Gordon's example and share their Amazon stats for the same time period?

My experience with Amazon is similar to Gordon's. Already in the Fourth Quarter my sales have exceeded what they were during the Second and Third Quarters combined.
There have been no changes to my pages, no new links added, SE positioning has been stable, nothing has changed except for the fact that Amazon made some changes on their end.
Obviously I can't say exactly why my sales have improved so much, but with everything else being a constant, what else would you attribute it to?

My conversion ratios (especially with Amazon.com) go up during the 4th quarter every year. It's tough to compare Q3 with Q4 and determine how much of it is seasonal growth and how much of it is termination of scumware.

I agree to a point. But when you consider the date the sales conversion increases took effect, and the date of Amazon's announcement, they are very close.
Could it just be coincidence? Yes, it could, but it's doubtful in my opinion. The only ones who can truly document the impact with cold hard data are the networks.
Based on my site's sales history, and comparing it to like periods last year, etc., this type of conversion increase is not typical for October, nor were the slow Second and Third Quarters typical either. Something else was making an impact.

To Gordon and all,
I apologize for being terse, it was unintentional and I was very tired. There is an impending death in my family and I am in charge of handling hospice and other details. Combined with my usual business duties and the upcoming meeting it has taken its toll on my energies. Again I apologize if sounded harsh- it was not meant that way and I do commend you for sharing data.

They cannot open their books- they sign contracts with merchants that will not permit this. Affiliate managers have this information though.

1- NO- there isn't enough data here and the set is very limited. Remember there are millions of dollars flowing through daily in performance marketing.
2- No. I am afraid it isn't conclusive.

By itself it's not conclusive. But if a hundred other Amazon affiliates whose traffic, SE rankings etc had been stable showed noticeable increases in their sales starting right when some major parasites were dropped, it would convince even the most rigorous statistical analysis that something significant had happened, something different than just "things always get busier at this time of year".
If I had enough Amazon stats to be worth adding to the mix I'd post them, but I don't promote them and my total Amazon commissions in 2002 last time I checked amounted to less than ten bucks. Imagine Wayne's reaction to the size of that data sample!

Sorry you are in this position when you least need to be. Apology accepted no problem.

Thanks for posting your stats, with a bit of luck others might follow suit and give Wayne enough data to do something with.

I'd have nice Amazon data to show except that my best pages dropped into the Goohoo pit. So my stats would be very skewed. I'm selling, but smaller ticket items and not at the rate I was previously.
That is one of the factors that is extremely difficult to isolate. My traffic has changed drastically, what keywords folks are finding my page with has changed drastically (unfortunately I personally find the searches less relevant, which impacts my CR).

Thanks for your understanding Gordon.
SSanf- nothing. Everyone- please don't send me data! Part of my job is data analysis, but that is certainly something I would never do on a message board. I do urge all affiliates to keep records and analyze their own data.
I simply want to to hear from merchants that cite similiar examples as was cited by Jim Gribble.
