Despite the fact that one of our newspaper publishers said we would have billboards over his dead body, we have them for the next four months. In fact, we have eight boards across our market! The message will rotate every month, but here are three of my favorites ...

Promoting our Jobs channel (http://jobs.phillyburbs.com)

Two for general branding ...

I don't know how much traffic it will drive, but it certainly has been a morale booster!

Jessica:
That one is a direct copy of a print ad we've been running. When it first ran, some folks (internally) turned their nose up at it. Then traffic (and revenue) for our Jobs channel spiked and the criticism abated. It's the one billboard I pushed the hardest for. Everytime I pass it on the expressway, it makes me smile!

We purposely kept the plan under wraps except for a few key people. We knew that if too many people got their fingers in the pie, we'd get a diluted, blah message. We'll probably have another round next year, and we'll be able to promote our shopping channels then!

What expressway? The Schuykill? I'll keep my eyes peeled for it!! Then you'll hear on KYW that there is a gaper delay westbound as crews work to get my car off the road and onto the "shoulder".

Actually, the Route 13 expressway. Here's the one negative to the whole thing. We could have had an AWESOME board on I-95, but we had to place boards in each market to avoid a major internal firestorm. So we have one in the Willow Grove area on PA 611, a few on Route 13 and a few on Route 130 in New Jersey.

I'd love to be listening to KYW and have them say "We've got a major back up on the Schuykill. It appears everyone is gawking at the phillyBurbs.com billboard." Talk about extending the reach of an advertising message!

How much does it cost to run a billboard ad (just in case I need it someday http://abw.infopop.cc/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif)

XO:

Boy, is that a tricky question. It depends on length of run and location of the board (mainly how many eyeballs will roll past on any given day - plus, are they lighted for night viewing?). For some reason, the more we talked with the company, the more they gave us. I think we have 8 boards running now, 10 in September & October, then 8 in November & December. Creatives will change monthly.

Did you guys design those internally or hire an ad agency? Either way, they look great. I like the retro 50's photos...

Dolemite:

We did the creatives in-house. We used the "retro" look for print ads in support of our Jobs channel and it worked well.

Thanks for the kind words!

Any spikes in traffic ?

XO:
I had looked into billboards to advertise once. The price was close to $1000/month on a fairly major road.

Greetings all:

We crunched most of our November numbers, so it seemed like a good time to update this thread. Since these billboards went, we set traffic records in each successive month - September, October and, now, November. I wouldn't make it a 1-to-1 cause & effect, but it clearly made a big impact. It also encouraged advertisers to get involved in the site, in particular car dealers and real estate agents. The next step is to get our mall some presence and see if that translates into more traffic and sales.

Hmm, billboards. Karl, did you ever try your mall with the billboards? Maybe i can get some billboards up at the interstate exits to the mall. Saying something like

Turn around -insert something clever-
Shopping on your butt is more fun
You don't really want to shop at this mall, do you?

Anybody else got something clever? http://abw.infopop.cc/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Nice!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Love the retro photo billboard of the two guys and the post-it.
The first one has great execution not annoying just right.
Better than the cr@p they used to make us
come up with when I worked at the newspaper in Miami.

Anybody else got something clever?

Face the billboard so the people see it as they're *leaving* the mall. Then--

Interesting Billboard. Looks good. Eye catching enough. Helps sell that brand name into memory.
