I just had a brain flash that I think is a good idea but one that I don't have time or energy to fulfill so I'm passing it on to ABW members. Anyone with a web master site and/or walking shoes to sell might love this one.
As I managed to ease my aching body out of "this chair" earlier, I realized that we all sit "here" day in and day out (well, I do ...) and that we need to get moving in some way. How about starting a "Web Walkers" site, where web masters could connect with other web masters in their area and walk together? I haven't checked for availability on the domain name "web walkers" but it sounds like a good one, for this idea or another. The web master who does this could link to walking shoes, web master stuff, etc.
Web masters could sign up in their state and city, then contact other like-minded walkers, runners or bike riders. Ideas could go on and on ...
What do you think? If anyone runs with this idea, I'd love to know. :-)

Interesting idea. What happens when the kooks find it and start trying to meet other people? There are a lot of kooks out there ya know.
Thankfully for me, I've got my lovely wife to walk with :)

Would I actually have to ::gasp:: walk? Or could I roll along in my office chair?

I guess we are conditioned to worry about "kooks" - I don't watch the news or read newspapers so I'm less inclined to fret about evil.

I walk with various friends, too, but the idea of a "web walkers" clique sounded like a good, fun idea. Maybe I'm spending too much time on ABW. LOL

I actually worked for a company called SportBrain. They manufactured a cool web pedometer and supported a very large (approx. 35k+ people) community. You could start clubs and compare stats - have rewards, competitions, etc. It was a pretty neat idea and many groups were using it. Just an idea...

I like the idea, a nice casual way to bring people together and get some body movement that is further up the body than the elbow :)
Cheers

Is there a way we could just do this virtually? My chair is pretty comfortable.

Virtually? Hmmm...those who sign up take just one walk. Make a short movie of your walk preferably with commentary and 'chair walkers' can view & vote on best movie in different walk categories.

That defeats the whole purpose, Michael.
Who's up for starting a virtual excercise site? ;-) People can sit around eating twinkies and watch others excercising. Pathetic ... ;-)

i HAVE to run evry day or I just turn into a grumpy, fat compuer bound nerd, who sits infront of the screen of 16 hours. I make myself get up early to get out. I think the idea is a good one.

I'm in, but only if I can bring my laptop to check stats. :)
J/K (well, sort of) but I would be interested in walking.

You all don't need to walk to stay fit. You just need to come over to my house and help with the yardwork. Good cardio, strength and muscle group workouts are available every day between March and November. I'll even provide sandwiches and cold drinks.

Maybe Haiko could set up a walking forum and we could do it from here...unless someone wants to take it on. My plate is full...that's why I need to walk :)

Not a bad idea. Maybe I could talk to someone about websites that would actually not be planning an escape route.
I am sure you all know the feeling.
You say "I have really been doing a lot on the web sites."
They are thinking "Uh oh..." :uhoh:
They say "Oh really".
You say "Well, I just added a brand new site...."
They are thinking "Be ready for a break, be ready for a break...."
You pause momentarily, giving them the "out".
They say, "Well, I've got to be going now, I have to...., I have to get to the store"
You say, "We can talk about this more later".
They think, "Yes MUCH later"
They are in nearly a full run now, ...away from you. :escape:

During college days, me and a bunch of friends started an excercise blog. Each day each of us would have to post a very short account of the time spent excercising.. gym, sports, running etc. It was ok if someone didn't do anything but was still required to post. The idea was to motivate each other. It ran well for a while (about 2 months) but then the finals came & the group disappeared.
Another such thing that we did was at my previous job.. but that was a weight loss program.. an interesting one though. A group of colleagues would pool in money & would get themselves weighed. At the end of the month, the person who registered the highest 'percentage' weight loss would be the winner & receive all money. Its a different thing that we had a tradition that the winner would buy everyone a beer & help the cause of beer bellies. :)
Jokes apart, we need to start some such program at ABW. Would be great fun. Haiko, what say? Health is wealth.
cheers!

The meet up web site is an interesting way to organize and advertise local meetings. There is a walkers meet up (http://walkers.meetup.com/). Of course, it attracts more than just webmasters. There also appears to be a hiking meet up (http://hiking.meetup.com/).
If ever I were in a position to organize a company, I would try to create work schedules that included both manually and mental activities for people. When working for a trucking company, I loved to go out and lump trucks as a diversion from programming. Everyone else thought I was an idiot.

I love this idea!
I was actually working on a local monthly get-together (middle TN) for online business owners... but I'm finding it's like pulling teeth to get them out of the house and out to dinner! LOL Checked meetup.com for groups already formed, but didnt find anything active there either.
I'll keep checking back here - if someone gets this rolling, I'm in!
