and the 800-number is right up there on top. any plans to track affiliates sending folks to that number?

Good point Herb. I will come up with something to make sure they are tracked. With fur coats it is probably likely that they phone them up for a chat. I'll get back to you tomorrow on this.

it is possible to display a numeric affiliate ID and call it a "priority number," and put it right under the 800#

others here can provide you with more information on that, if you wish.

Its so ridiculous how we affiliates get screwed with the 1 800 numbers....

Here is the equation....

The Higher the price of the item + 1 800 Number = Phone Order

Phone Order = Free Sales

Free Sales = Affiliates and Networks Get Screwed....

Please note, it is in Watchdog's interest, short term and long term to make absolutely sure you are getting paid for referred sales. We are also compensated based on our performance and have a vested interest that affiliate referred sales are counted as such.

That said, MAM wants to build up its affiliate program and understands the issue and is putting a system in place to take care of this.

I would not ask people to work for free, and to be honest, I don't like to work for free either.

I hope that alleviates some of your concerns!

Please feel free to contact me directly if you would like to discuss this!

Jennifer oh Jenny.....The De La Soul Version....

This is just a harsh reality that people over look, its not a dig at you...but it is a reality of the industry...Phone orders suck....unless they are tracked.

I personally know first hand the amount of phone orders that occur, and it is HUGE.

So what can we do?

Here is what we can do:

Short Term: Examine cookies of web visitors to see if they contain a publisher cookie, and if they do, display a message such as "Mention XYZ to the Customer Care Rep to Receive a Special Offer". XYZ of course would be designed to identify the publisher who has referred the sale. The phone operators can also be trained to ask how they heard about the company, and if it is through a website, they can ask for the customer to look for a code or identifier. While this is not perfect, it is a step in the right direction and will help.

Longer Term: Integrate a click to call setup which will allow the user to enter their phone number into the site, and then will place a call to the Customer Service Center, and once an agent is available, to the customer. Since this is initiated through the website, publiser IDs can be easily tracked and recorded, so that there is a more verifiable trail of affiate referred call-ins.

The customer will be motivated to use the web call setup if it is presented as a convenience, so that they do not have to sit on hold, and they know that their own phone will ring with a rep on the line.

Watchdog is currently evaluating this as a solution to this problem in general, although for the time being we will have to rely on the first method.

It is indeed a dilema, since it is not fair to ask a company to not post a help number, and it is also not fair to have affiliates refer traffic that they don't get compensated for.

I will let you know when we have our solution nailed down. It would be nice if this were universal, but acceptance is slow with new technologies.

If anyone on this board knows of an out of the box solution available for the longer term scenario I described, please get in touch with me. I would also be interested in hearing from providers who have gateway access and can initiate calls on the PSTN. SIP or H323...
