Putin Fires Navy Chief Kuroyedov
In a widely expected shakeup, President Vladimir Putin has fired long-serving Navy chief Vladimir Kuroyedov, who has been blamed for mishandling a series of disasters, including the sinking of the Kursk submarine in 2000.
Kuroyedov, who turns 60 on Monday and has headed the Navy since 1997, was relieved of his duties by a presidential decree, the Kremlin announced Sunday.
The Moscow Times (http://www.moscowtimes.ru/stories/2005/09/05/010.html)
I deemed it interesting to mention here, as the recent Russian submersible incident was brought up not so long ago in another thread (http://forum.abestweb.com/showthread.php?t=62695). The old Navy Chief surely remembered that too when being fired. Russian News & Information Agency (http://en.rian.ru/russia/20050905/41299500.html) mentions it too.
