Question: Does anyone think Beckham will have any impact whatsoever in terms of soccer's popularity in the US?

Good one.
His move to the U.S. has definitely created a lot of PR, but has it mainly "promoted" Victoria and David, or has it influenced the U.S. soccer popularity on the overall is a good question.

I don't think it will do anything at all for soccer in the US. The US fan will not sit through a contest that ends in a 1-1 tie.

IMO, he'll be soon gone. To be more precise, when enough millions accumulate in his pocket.

i agree with geno, lots of publicity for the league and his team...but in reality...americans will only care about him and posh. whether he steps on the field or not is unimportant! poor soccer... :(

Brian,
I like how you are visiting ABestWeb from home, you're always thinking about work!
As for soccer, I completely agree with David and Victoria's popularity rising (for instance her upcoming reality tv show & spice girls reunion tour). But I do think they will make Galaxy games more popular. Celebrities are buying up tickets like they would for a Lakers or Yankees game so I think the average joe will follow.

The average Joe is no longer interested in a baseball game, much less a soccer game. Basketball has poisoned our mindset (that's right, poisoned) into thinking a game with a score less than 438 isn't worth watching.
As for me? I love watching a good defensive sport like soccer and / or hockey. I love the thrill of a scoring opportunity and seeing how teams set up to try to capitalize on those opportunities. But perhaps the thing I enjoy watching most is a well-killed penalty in hockey. But I don't think the average American could care less.
We live in a SportsCenter highlight society. And soccer just doesn't provide enough of those moments in a 2 hour + match to keep the average American interested long term. And that makes me sad.

"Question: Does anyone think Beckham will have any impact whatsoever in terms of soccer's popularity in the US?"
No, because after the hype, it's still Soccer, still not much scoring. Now I loved Soccer growing up, played about 8 seasons but in America, football, basketball, baseball (throw in hockey) are the bigger sports whereas in most other countries Soccer is. So it's never going to supplant those in the US.

Soccer (football as we call it in Europe) is a wonderful game. It is about scoring. But the show (each match) is also very much about strategy, individual player performance, coach vs coach duel, and many other things fun to watch when you appreciate them... Soccer in the U.S. is a different thing. I think, it's the mindset, the cultural thing that gets in the way when we talk about soccer in the U.S. You have so many other wonderful team sport games in the U.S. "market" that soccer is still having a hard time finding its niche; and as a result is not yet appreciated by as many people as in Europe (or South America). Maybe one day... :) Maybe through events like Beckham getting to L.A. Galaxy... Who knows?

our opinions are laid out by tv. If tv promotes footbal enough, its not you and I (I hope) who will get influenced, but the kids.
Thats enough to get footbal rolling in the usa
