Starting a new comparison shopping site with awesome analytics/value ratings
Hi,
My name is Alex. I formerly worked as the 1st employee and Director of Operations for a now large (220 employees) data analysis enterprise software company in Palo Alto. I am working currently to develop some new analysis technology that will be used to create a new comparison shopping site. The hope is to bring a lot of the great insights we learned about studying data in huge data sets to ecommerce (which has much smaller data sets) where consumers can benefit from understanding a greater sense of value for the products they are comparing/buying.
I am very excited to connect with folks who are also in the comparison shopping realm and on becoming an expert generally in ecommerce.
Best Regards,
Alex

Welcome Alex, Great and ambitious project!
There are so many different types/styles/niche products out there I would imagine writing a single application to catalog them all and present them to consumers in a value added way effectively will be very challenging.
I look forward to hearing more about it.
Best,
Greg

Sounds Interesting
I work for a company that has built a price comparison platform in a distributed way, for all affiliates to use. We are also, so far in planning stages, looking at a smarter product recommendation alghorithm than the ones used today.
Interesting that you think it's a smaller dataset from your previous work . I personally think that it is quite a large set, when updating 100 M + products.
Good luck, let's keep in touch!

Adamson - I'd def. be interested in chatting about different issues related to this market. My last company was analyzing sets much larger than 100MM records for huge orgs/gov.
I tried to message you, but I think you might have the ability for me to message you feature off. My aim is: advancingalex Also perhaps I could send you an email to outline our approach.

Hi Alex, I am also in Palo Alto / Los Altos area and we could chat on this one on one if needed. My schedule this holiday season is tight. May be we can connect early next year or during the Affiliate Summit in Vegas or LS Symposium in SF or right here in Palo Alto.

Herb or Admin - how many posts are required to use the chat function? I've already made some nice contacts with awesome folks through skype and AIM, but using the internal chat client would be nice as welll...

very good idea! There are a lot of comparison shopping sites, Why would we go to your site? What makes your site beat others? In my view, you can focus on some particular products or categories.

hapmedia - we are specifically focusing on creating data analysis tools which will allow users to quantify products via value scores. For example, with 1600 digital cameras on the market it's tough for consumers to understand which ones are giving the best megapixels/$. Also things like quality of brand, time on market, user reviews, etc. all give a sense of value. Our company will use complex algorithms to give overall value scores. This will takeaway the fear for users that they are getting ripped off or are just randomly buying something. We are using computer science to add some simple to understand expertise for all products for all people.
I'd love to connect via Skype to explain more or AIM: My name is: advancingalex
Any interest in connecting?
