Yes, 'our' representative to the Nov 7th meeting is promoting BoxTops. An email I just received from ClubMom:

quote:

Saving Box Tops may seem like a small thing to do for your school. But small things add up. Especially if you join the Box Tops for Education Booster Club.
You also get a subscription to an e-newsletter with children's book recommendations, family movie reviews, mealtime solutions, money-saving coupons and more.
Pass the word. Grandpas and grandmas, aunts and uncles and even friends are all welcome to enter -- and save Box Tops.
They add up. Since its launch in 1996, Box Tops for Education has donated more than $90 million to schools, including a record $21 million last year.
That's money schools can use on computers, art supplies, theatrical productions, athletics and more.
The offer advertised in this email is sponsored by the respective company mentioned herein. ClubMom is not responsible for the content of the offer advertised, or for fulfillment of the offer.

It was an html email, so sorry about no click links, etc.
The link to BoxTops in the email was a doubleclick link which takes you to the BoxTops signup page.

This was a media buy through our advertising department. I was not aware of it until I received the e-mail today.
Believe me - I was not aware of this in advance.

Consider for a second...

Our advertising department does not clear their ad sales through me

I am responsible for the results of our online shopping area, so I obviously don't want to do something that will siphon those sales

I run our affiliate program, so I would loudly be against anything that would potentially upset our affiliates[/list]
Also, I spoke with our ad director, and that was a one time solo e-mail - we don't have anything else going on with them.

I can't imagine our advertising director doing something like this without consulting the rest of our management team first.
I leave it at that and cut this short before I say something considered unprofessional or inflammatory.

Proof of what? There was never a question of whether the e-mail was sent.
I regret that this e-mail went out, and if I could undo it, I'd do so.
It may seem a bit crazy, but some employees in management positions have a degree of autonomy, and their jobs are not micromanaged and performed by committee.

Right, Shawn.
Uh-huh. We believe you.
If what you are saying is true, I hope you hold a management meeting immediately to make sure cr@p like this doesn't EVER happen again! How are you going to let your members know you REALLY don't promote this?
Quite a dilemma, isn't it?
You really are just a puppet for the parasites, aren't you?

A degree of autonomy? A DEGREE of autonomy? What kind of corporate culture allows autonomy to engage in unethical, predatory business practices?
Oops, forgot ...

Yes Andy - you have me all figured out. I orchestrated this who thing, because I figured the short term gains of a one-off advertisement would far outweigh the work I've been doing for nearly 4 years here.
Now that we've got that out in the open, I'm going to get back to work.
Have a nice day.

Well if you're going to get back to work Shawn, can I make a suggestion? Maybe you want to focus some of those antiparasite activities of yours at ClubMom? Seems like some folks there need an education.

Don't feel bad, Shawn. You're not the first one who's given up their morals and ethics for the almighty dollar! Stop pretending to be something you aren't. Actions speak louder than words, and I've seen too many "mistakes" from your camp.

Andy -
Please substantiate these "mistakes." That's wreckless garbage to go around making such baseless statements.

I'm sitting here biting my tongue because I know I'd get dumped on if I raised a caution about boring things like libel laws and more care in wording ... but it's sad to see the way this thread is going.
This incident is a textbook example of the staggering, ceaseless need for merchant education. We should be energized by it, but instead the possibilities for motivation are getting buried under a pile of personal vitriol and finger-pointing.
I for one believe that Shawn had nothing to do with that letter, and was in fact stabbed in the back by someone who didn't understand the issues.
And somewhere a parasite chuckles ...

Just thought I would chime in too from the corporate side of things. Let me put on my rubber suit first.
Yes, being in the position I am in, I have some leeway to run certain campaigns the way I feel is appropraite for my programs. Not to say I can do whatever I wanted without senior management's approval but:
1. I make recommendations
2. Senior management makes the final decision and gives me the big strategic picture
3. I then run tactical to achieve our set goals
And in some circumstances, other departments may be left out of the loop (for many reasons). Shawn's case may be just that. We also have other marketing managers who run campaigns without me being involved. Having said that, if they happen to stumble into an area which I feel is inappropriate and will hinder my own programs, they wil definitely hear something from me at the next meeting.
Not trying to stir the pot but coming from my end, I can see how this situation can be a big misunderstanding.
Leaving the office now and finally, we have 1 day of sunshine in Vancouver!

While I can "fully" understand that ClubMom execs may be autonomous, I find it ABSOFREAKINGINCREDULOUS(C) that that an advertising for this parasite goes out when Shawn, himself identifies that he has been "fighting" the parasites for four years! Obviously none of the execs there have meetings.
Note - ABSOFREAKINGINCREDULOUS(C) - ME!

I would fire the person who set up this advertising. Doesn't this person know that BoxTops has a shopping mall just like Club Mom does, that they are advertising something that would take business away from ClubMom?
Anyone who sets up advertising for the competition should be fired immediately.
And if they claim they didn't know, well you should always check out companies you are going to basically give your stamp of approval for.
